A Technological Environment for Promoting Mathematical Reasoning: A Dynamic Approach to Geometric Proof
نویسنده
چکیده
Euclidean geometry and geometric proof have occupied a central place in mathematics education from classical Greek society through to twentieth century Western culture. It is proof which sets mathematics apart from the empirical sciences, and forms the foundation of our mathematical knowledge, yet the latter part of the twentieth century witnessed the demise of both Euclidean geometry and proof in school mathematics curricula in many countries. Research indicates that students often fail to understand the purpose of mathematical proof, and readily base their convictions on empirical evidence or the authority of a textbook or teacher. A major large-scale survey of above average Year 10 students in the UK (Healy and Hoyles 1999) has shown that many students, even those who have been taught proof, have little idea of the significance of mathematical proof, are unable to recognise a valid proof, and are unable to construct a proof in either familiar or unfamiliar contexts.

Mathematical Reasoning in a Technological Environment
Dynamic geometry software has been accused of contributing to an empirical approach to school geometry. However, used appropriately it can provide students with a visually rich environment for conjecturing and proving. Year 8 students who were novices with regard to geometric proof were able to exploit the features of Cabri Geometry II to assist them in formulating and proving in the context of...
متن کاملGrounded and embodied mathematical cognition: Promoting mathematical insight and proof using action and language
We develop a theory of grounded and embodied mathematical cognition (GEMC) that draws on action-cognition transduction for advancing understanding of how the body can support mathematical reasoning. GEMC proposes that participants' actions serve as inputs capable of driving the cognition-action system toward associated cognitive states. This occurs through a process of transduction that promote...
متن کاملDynamical behavior of a stage structured prey-predator model
In this paper, a new stage structured prey-predator model with linear functional response is proposed and studied. The stages for prey have been considered. The proposed mathematical model consists of three nonlinear ordinary differential equations to describe the interaction among juvenile prey, adult prey and predator populations. The model is analyzed by using linear stability analysis to ob...
متن کاملBankruptcy Prediction: Dynamic Geometric Genetic Programming (DGGP) Approach
In this paper, a new Dynamic Geometric Genetic Programming (DGGP) technique is applied to empirical analysis of financial ratios and bankruptcy prediction. Financial ratios are indeed desirable for prediction of corporate bankruptcy and identification of firms’ impending failure for investors, creditors, borrowing firms, and governments. By the time, several methods have been attempted in...
متن کاملAN APPLICATION OF FUZZY NUMBERS TO THE ASSESSMENT OF MATHEMATICAL MODELLING SKILLS
In this paper we use the Triangular and Trapezoidal Fuzzy Numbers as tools for assessing student Mathematical Modelling (MM) skills. Fuzzy Numbers play a fundamental role in fuzzy mathematics analogous to the role played by the ordinary numbers in classical mathematics, On the other hand, MM appears today as a dynamic tool for teaching and learning mathematics, because it connects mathematics w...
